In bygone days, olive oil was chiefly used for body massage and other cosmetic purposes. Documents reveal that in ancient Greece, every adult consumed up to 55 litres of oil per year, 30 of which were employed for personal hygiene. Likewise, the ancient Romans used olive oil as a detergent and body-care product, and were in the habit of dousing their skin with it before and after bathing. Nowadays, in many Mediterranean countries, olive oil soaps are used before and after taking Turkish baths. Antakya, a town in the southern part of Turkey, near the border with Syria, is the home of one of the most important soap industries in the world. Anthioch soaps (Anthioch is the old name of this town) have been produced since time immemorial, and archaeologists have unearthed fossilized bars from over 1500 years ago.<\/p>\n
